Relativistic particles in the Earth’s atmosphere

چکیده
The Earth’s atmosphere is a large scale laboratory to study particles. Particles from stellar processes impinge on the top of the Earth’s atmosphere and propagate downward. Particles from discharge processes at the bottom of the atmosphere propagate upwards into near-Earth space. The acceleration of both particle populations in the Earth’s atmosphere produces electromagnetic radiation which is observed at remote distances. The observation of the electromagnetic radiation makes it possible to detect the particles and to determine their impact on the Earth’s atmosphere. The quantitative description of the electromagnetic radiation enables an assessment of the

A Computer Modeling of Mie-Scattering by Spherical Droplets Within the Atmosphere
The Earth’s atmosphere is an environment replete with particles of differ-ent sizes with various refractive indices which affect the light radiation traveling through it. The Mie scattering theory is one of the well-known light scattering techniques ap-plicable to modeling of electromagnetic scattering from tiny atmospheric particles or aerosols floating in the air or within the clouds. In this...
متن کاملFrictional and radiation heating of micron-sized meteoroids in the Earth’s upper atmosphere
This paper follows on from earlier work presented on the dynamics of micron-sized meteoroid particles, as they are decelerated in the Earth’s atmosphere at heights of 100 km or greater. Here the heating effects on these meteoroids are examined; both the intense heating during deceleration and the temperatures reached by particles settling through the atmosphere with low speeds ∼cm s−1 are consi...
متن کاملRadio pulses from cosmic ray air showers Boosted Coulomb and Čerenkov fields
High-energy cosmic rays passing through the Earth’s atmosphere produce extensive showers whose charges emit radio frequency pulses. Despite the low density of the Earth’s atmosphere, this emission should be affected by the air refractive index because the bulk of the shower particles move roughly at the speed of radio waves, so that the retarded altitude of emission, the relativistic boost and ...
متن کاملEnergetic Charged Particles Above Thunderclouds
The French government has committed to launch the satellite TARANIS to study transient coupling processes between the Earth’s atmo sphere and near-Earth space. The prime objective of TARANIS is to detect energetic charged particles and hard radiation emanating from thunderclouds. The British Nobel prize winner C.T.R. Wilson predicted lightning discharges from the top of thunderclouds into spac...
متن کاملCosmic Ray Abundance at Aircraft Altitudes in the Earth’s Atmosphere
Recent investigations of cosmic ray primaries and secondaries at aviation altitudes in the Earth’s atmosphere include the study of Z≥2 particles along the London-New York flight routes on supersonic aircraft. Preliminary charge spectra will be presented for these nuclei and comparisons will be made with the predictions of cosmic ray transport models in the Earth’s atmosphere.
